This blog will now be technical, medical, astronomical and general scientifically related in theme. I will try to post 3-4 times a week.
I recently installed a brand-new 40 gig harddrive for my poor ol’ laptop. Its a Gateway Solo 2550. It has 128 mg of RAM, a 24x CD Rom (no burner) drive, a 3 1/2″ floppy drive, an internal 56k fax/modem, and PCMCIA ethernet and wireless cards. It previously had a spec 6 gig harddrive. I’m going to update the RAM as soon as I find two cheap, working 128 modules.
It has taken me three days to switch over files, bookmarks and pics. I had saved as much as I could to my gmail accounts but the new firefox (1.5) is incompatible with an old extension that I had uploaded all my bookmarks online with, which meant I had to literally handcopy the ones I hadn’t put on links or blogrolls elsewhere.
If I didn’t already have carpal tunnel and RA, this would have definitely put me over the diagnosis line. I HAD to let my hands rest for almost six hours. It felt like an eternity. There is a family joke: “How do you stop Joy from talking? Sit on her hands!”. Resting my hands was just as bad. I type, cook and occasionally clean with these mitts ‘o mine (I have Seinfeld ‘man hands’). I felt mute.
But I have a nice working computer almost completely up-to-date. I just need to link it into my home network so I can copy and sync up files and passwords.
If I ever get organized entirely I’ll know I’m about ready to die.
